Reducing falls: the QiPP (Quality, Innovation, Productivity, Prevention) Exercise Continuum initiative.
These classes have been designed to help older people improve their balance, co-ordination, increase their confidence and reduce the occurrences of falls...
'The Exercise Continuum is a pathway of physical activity opportunities for older people with chronic long term conditions and/or at risk of a fall. This initiative is part of the QiPP work stream to reduce non-elective hospital admissions resulting from a fall. The Primary Care Trust has commissioned a falls prevention activity programme at 8 locations around the county as a step-down from therapy led rehabilitation, as well as a Level 3 volunteer training scheme to recruit community leaders and individuals to lead their own low-level exercise groups.
Each year we can expect around 50,000 falls in Cornwall, 500 hip fractures and 5,000 ambulance activations following a fall. Last year the cost to the NHS in terms of acute admissions and ambulance activations alone was £7.9m.
The benefits of using an evidence-based exercise programme to prevent future falls and fractures have been proven . I am pleased to support this initiative and encourage you to do the same'.
